Sí
Themselves, yourselves (form. [fam.pl. in L.A.])
How do you tell the difference between “Sí” meaning themselves or meaning him/herself?
Figure out which subject “Sí” refers to
Example:
“Esto en sí no es difícil.”
This in itself is not difficult. (Esto is a vague subject, but IS a subject)
“Guillermina lo repite para sí.”
Guillermina repeats it to herself.
(Guillermina is the subject. Lo means “it”, and refers to what Guillermina is repeating. That leaves “sí” to refer back to Guillermina herself.)
Sí + form of “mismo” =
Emphasis or clarification. Mismo doesn’t get translated.
Example:
“Lo hacen por sí mismas.”
They’re doing it for (by) themselves.
“Lo repetí para mí mismo.”
I repeated it to myself.
