What is prepatellar bursitis?
Bursitis (inflammation) of the prepatellar bursa.
What is a bursa and where is the prepatellar bursa located?
A fluid-filled sac which reduces friction, the prepatellar bursa is located superficially between the skin and patella.
What is the cause of prepatellar bursitis?
Infection (30%) vs non-infection (70%)
Direct fall on the patella, repeated blows or friction with skin and patealla.
What is the Epidemiology of prepatellar bursitis? (who does it affect)?
Men > Women
Commonly Males aged 40-60.
What is the clinical presentation of prepatellar bursitis?
Pain, Swelling & warmth, Limited ROM.
Fever and Chills if cause is infectious.
What is the Diagnostic procedure?
XR, MRI and CT can be done to rule out # or STI. Arthrocentesis can be done to determine whether or not bursa is infected.
What is the management of prepatellar bursitis?
PRICE / NSAIDs / Activity Modification then stretch and strengthen.
Medical if Infectious.
