Define Western.
refers to a broad set of cultural - and religious - features that have historically served to divide Greek, Roman and - later - Judeo-Christian societies from their neighbors and enemies
Modern: Democracies > Monarchies
List “Western” countries
North America, Australia, Europe, & New Zealand
What fundamental political ideologies do western countries share?
Liberal Democracy, Rule of Law, Human Rights, & Gender Equality
What is the main difference between Western and Non Western Countries?
Western countries developed from Greek and Roman ideologies.
Define “The Other”
Part of Archetypal Criticism, individual who is perceived by the group as not belonging, as being different in some fundamental way. Not always a minority.
Give Examples of “The Other”
Different Race, Nationality, Religion, Social Class, Political Ideology, Sexual Orientation, Origin, Education, Gender, Ability & World Mindset
Define “The Outsider”
as the possibility of being accepted by and incorporated into the group; for example, offspring are very likely to be accepted into the group. Outsiders may become part of the group over time as they become known.
What is the difference between “The Other” and “The Outsider”?
: Outsiders can assimilate (learn to be like the group); Others cannot change what makes them different.
Define Ethnocentricism
“Defined as the attitude that other societies’ customs and ideas can be judged in the context of one’s own culture.
What are some positives of Ethnocentrism?
Helps create group solidarity and identity (Ex. Olympics)
What is Ethnocentrism NOT?
Being proud of who you are or defending your beliefs; its seeing others as BAD for not being just like you
Define Cultural Relativism
attitude that a society’s customs and ideas should be viewed within the context of that society’s problems and opportunities. (Live and Let Live)
What is Surface Culture?
Easiest part of culture to identify but not usually the most important.
List examples of Surface Cultures.
Language, Clothing, Holidays etc.
What is Root Culture?
Hardest part of culture to identify but usually the most important.
