Preparation of IV Therapy Flashcards
What is IV therapy?
An alternative medication route used to administer fluids and medications to pts who can’t have substances orally.
What is one benefit of receiving fluids or medication intravenously?
Because it goes directly into the vein, it is quickly than orally. It enters the bloodstream quicker.
Using the ______ from the tubing to penetrate the IV bag to withdraw solution and go into pts bloodstream.
Using the spike from the tubing to penetrate the IV bag to withdraw solution and go into pts bloodstream.
What is called when you put the solution from the IV bag through the line to remove air?
Priming the line.
Why do we prime the IV tubing line?
To prevent an air embolism (air bubbles).
What is an embolism and what is its importance when it comes to priming a line?
An obstruction. We don’t want air bubbles to enter the vein and block it.
What do you use to draw up solution into a syringe?
A blunt/drawing up needle.
Why do we use a blunt needle to draw up meds?
To prevent needle-stick injuries. Also, needles tend to get blunt which is why you use a sharp and different needle to administer.
What is a flush?
Flushing is a process where you push any remaining medication. It also helps to clear the line and keep clean?
What is a micropin used for?
For withdrawal or injection of medication from rubber-stoppered vials.
