the hero faces a minor obstacle as the quest begins. this encourages them to turn back. this is called the threshold guardian and makes the hero more dedicated/stronger

the hero faces tests that increase the hero’s strength and prepare the hero for the supreme ordeal. enemies try to stop the hero and allies help and fight alongside the hero

the hero finally reaches the most dangerous part of the journey. this is where the hero faces the shadow, the main antagonist. the hero proves their world while facing fears
approaching the inmost cave
battles and defeats the shadow. at some point during the battle, it seems that the hero has lost/died. hero is victorious
the supreme ordeal
hero receives a reward for defeating the shadow. it is usually something that will help hero make the world a better place
reward/seizing the sword
the shadow is defeated so the hero returns home. the road home presents the hero with minor challenges but hero easily overcomes them. this gives hero time to reflect
the road back
when hero comes back, they are stronger than ever. has changed w/ power to make the world a better place
resurrection
the hero’s journey has solved the problem and the world is a better place
restoring the world
what is an epic
a long narrative poem that tells the great deeds of a larger than life hero who embodies the value of a particular society. it is written like a poem but tells an exciting adventure
the hero is a protagonist?
yes a great leader who is respected in society. they identify strongly w/ a particular group of people or society
the setting?
the setting is broad and includes supernatural realms such as the Land of the Dead or other hell setting
conflicts?
include struggles, battles and/or a great quest

use of figurative language, heightened exaggerated and imaginative language. vivid imagery

larger than life

of noble birth, has a unique background. something makes them more special/sets them apart from the others.
quest?
the hero usually undertakes a quest/journey to achieve something of great value to themselves or society
immortality
the hero lives on after death. they are are remembered forever by those who live after them
superman?
no the hero is not a super man w/ magical powers. they are a regular human who has skills, aspirations and talents that set them apart. seems almost superhuman
do they keep their humanity?
an epic hero overcomes great obstacles and opponents, but is able to maintain humanity
do they have human emotions?
yes they experience typical human emotions yet are able to master these traits to a greater degree than a typical person. they have self-control
what are their relationship w/ “lesser humans”
the hero must make contact with those perceived as lesser humans in order to succeed.
