What does supine mean?
Supine means to be flat on your back. Head up.
What does prone mean?
Prone means to be on your stomach. Head down.
Anatomical Postion is when?
A person is standing
- face forward
- Arms at side
- Palma are forward
- feel point forward
Axial Body consists of
Head , Neck and Trunk.
Appendicular Body consists of
Limbs , appendages.
Added to axial Body.
Definition of Superior
Toward the head
Ex - the heart is located superior to the small intestine.
Definition of inferior?
Toward the feet.
Ex - the small intestine is located inferior to the heart.
Definition of Anterior
Further to the front ( in front of )
Ex- the sternum is anterior to the heart.
Definition of Posterior ?
Further to the back ( in back of )
Ex - the heart is posterior to the heart.

Toward the midline of the body.
Ex- Heart lies medial to the lungs

Toward the side of the body
Ex- the lungs lies lateral to the heart.

Closer to the axial body. ( Toward the trunk. )

Further away from the axial body ( toward the feet )

Ex - the sternum is superficial to the lungs

When transporting patients or in any situation what position should you have them in and why ?
You should have them in a supine position because you are able to see them breathe ( see chest rise and fall )
Easier to suction if you have to.
What is recovery position
- Head tilted back
- hand supporting hand
- bent arm gives stability
- bent leg props the body & prevents rolling over.
This position is is best for seizures , vomiting , overdose.

Fowler’s position is very similar to bending seated but your legs are up.
In what situation would you put a patient in Fowler’s position
“ Feeling like you’re downing “ when sleeping being propped up makes it easier to breathe also keep the fluid build up in the lungs at the bottom.
