Embryo
When does the embryonic stage occur?
2 to 8 weeks
What type of development occurs in the embryonic stage?
sexual development
What develops in the sexual development stage?
gonads develop (sex glands)
What stage is the infant most susceptible to damage by chemicals?
during the embryonic stage
Why is the infant most susceptible to damage during the embryonic stage?
Most mothers don’t realise they’re pregnant so will drink etc which can cause birth defects
What are teratogens?
Substances which when ingested by the mother to be can adversely affect the unborn child
When do teratogens rarely have an impact?
During the zygotic stage
When does the foetal stage occur?
from 2 to 9 months
What are some characteristics of the foetal stage?
Bones and muscles are developed
Infant may move eg. kicking
What are infants able to do at 9 weeks during development?
Hold hands and hiccup
