Prenatal and Postnatal Circulations Flashcards
Placental Arteries and Veins in foetal circulation? What do they become postnatal?
There are 2 placental arteries which carry deoxygenated blood from the foetus to the placenta.
There is 1 placental vein which carries oxygenated blood from the placenta to the foetus.
The umbilical arteries and veins become ligaments postnatally. The umbilical arteries become the medial umbilical ligaments. The umbilical vein becomes the ligamentum teres of liver.
What allows blood to bypass the liver in prenatal circulation?
What does this become postnatally?
The ductus venosus allows blood to bypass the liver in foetal circulation.
It becomes the ligamentum venosum postnatally.
What allows blood to bypass the lungs in prenatal circulation?
The ductus arteriosus allows blood to bypass the lungs in foetal circulation by shunting blood from pulmonary trunk into the aorta.
It becomes the ligamentum arteriosum postnatally.
The foramen ovale allows blood to be shunted from the right atrium to the left atrium bypassing the lungs (right side=lungs, left=systemic).
It becomes the Fossa Ovalis.
