Frame rate
Frame rate is the amount of video playback frames per second.
Aspect Ration
The rate of width to height in a frame. Commonly 16:9 and 4:3.
Audio Sampling rates
Measures the amount of audio samples for an analog signal per second, measured in kilohertz.
Safe Zone/margins
The area where you can text and it wont get cut off.
Rendering
The process of drawing the images of your video into a final file format.
Codec
To encode and/or encrypt data as it transmits from source destination. Or to compress a video.
White balancing
Verifying white appears as it does in reality as well as in your footage.
Color grading
the process of changing the visual tone of an image or, in this case, video clip.
Tone
The overall vibrancy of the colors.
Color correction
Individual colors are changed.
Bit depth
Determines the amount of color information per pixel within an image.
Clipping
The distortion of audio waveform, when an amplifier is pushed past its limits.
Audio levels
The amount of volume in a clip.
Shotgun mic
A unidirectional mic which captures what is directly in front of the mic.
Handheld mic
Very versatile.
Wireless mic
Used when only one person is talking, can be handheld or attachable.
Condenser mic
A type of mic designed to pick up on small sounds, high frequencies. They are fragile and need phantom power.
Dynamic mic
A type of mic used for loud sources of sound and used for live sound. These mics are more robust.
Ambient Sound
Background noise that occurs when filming in a location. To help audio blend, or can be bad.
Room tone
The little subtle noise preset in almost all rooms.
Foley sound
The reproduction of sound effects.
Aperture
The size of the opening on a lens which light passes through.
Shutter speed
Determines how long a cameras sensor is expose to light.
ISO, The international organization for standardization
The measure of the sensitivity of an image sensor in relation to light. The lower the number the more light needed and the less there will be digital noise.
Zoom Camera Lens
Used to move smoothly between focal lengths. Used to quickly move from focused to unfocused and wide angle shots to a medium angle shot.
Prime or fixed
cannot zoom, has a fixed focal length and has a faster aperture than zoom lenses
telephoto
used to capture subjects that are far away or magnify a subject, the standard focal length is 60 mm
tripod
Used to lock a camera in place and keep from shaking.
dolly
A wheeled cart camera used usually of tracks and rails. Move smoothly horizontally.
leading in/out (pre/post roll)
strategic pausing and starting to provide editor with good cutting points.
Matching shots
between 2 shots, 1 shot is cut to another in a way that looks seamless.
Zoom shot
When a lens starts at one focal length and end on another creating an effect of taking a wide shot and making it a close-up or vice versa.
Pan shot
when a camera i locked into a position, like on a tripod, but is able to rotate in order to get a panoramic view of a shot.
tight shot
a close up shot, and maintain the focus on a subject.
wide shot
a shot for describing a scene
establishing shot
A shot taken at the beginning of a scene, shows the audience what is going on
closing shot
A shot used to close a scene
b roll footage
footage hat supplements a video, such as a clip consisting of action going on while you hear a narration in the background.
Master wide shot
A shot used to establish and describe a scene
Coverage shot
shooting a scene from different distances and positions to better capture what is going on.
cut off points
points in a video to where cuts are made
cut
an abrupt transition from one shot to another
L cut
extends an audio clip from a preceding video clip to a subsequent video clip.
Room tone
The normal noise you hear when you walk into a room
