When is premedication used nowadays

A

No longer advocated due to the increasing day surgeries which require quicker induction time and recovery time
It is only really used in patients with special requirements such as autism or phobias that would require anxiolytics

A

Anxiolytics and children

A

Not normally required
Topical anaesthetic creams used frequently
Tetracaine (ametop) more popular than Emla and it doesn’t vasoconstrict
Presence of a parent or play therapist more powerful than anxiolytics
If required use oral midazolam syrup sometimes mixed with ketamine
