Untreated Hypotonia?

A

Untreated hypotonia can lead to hip dislocation and other problems. Treatment is via physical therapy. In some cases, braces may be needed to permit a full range of movement in patients with hypotonia.

Skin to Skin aka Kangaroo Care

A

Most comfortable habitat for babies
Skin to skin is how they got into the world.

Helps to regulate baby’s heart rate and breathing – better oxygenation
Reduces apnoea and bradycardia (periods of irregular breathing and heart rate that can occur in preterm babies)
Better temperature stability
Analgesic (pain relieving) effect
Increases time in quiet sleep which may help brain development and growth
Enhances mother-baby attachment
Improves breastfeeding success and longer breastfeeding duration
Babies grow faster and are discharged sooner from hospital
Reduces maternal stress / depression
When babies reach six months they can have longer alert periods and less crying

1. Support baby on pillows at breast height
2. Roll the baby toward you, “belly to belly”
3. Line the baby up “nose to nipple”
