Prelim Topics Flashcards
the study of the disease processes
PATHOLOGY
the study of the cause of disease & often misused as synonym for the actual cause of a disease
ETIOLOGY
an abnormal changes in the function and structure within the human body
DISEASE
a morbid process, usually having specific characteristics of symptoms and physical signs
DISEASE
an alteration from the normal structure and function of any part of the body
DISEASE
is a sequence of events that leads from the cause of a disease, to abnormalities, and finally to manifestations
PATHOGENESIS
the determination of the disease an individual is believed to have
DIAGNOSIS
the predicted course of a disease & the prospects for the patient’s recovery
PROGNOSIS
an analysis of specimen taken from the patient, such as blood or excrement that can be used to determine disease processes
TESTS
a term that refers to the observed changes in the patient that are cause by the disease, namely Symptoms or Signs
MANIFESTATIONS
SUBJECTIVE & only patient’s can identify them
SYMPTOM/S
a written description of symptoms in a patient’s record
HISTORY
OBJECTIVE manifestations that are physically observed by the health examiner
SIGNS
patient’s perception of the disease, such as headache or abdominal pain
SYMPTOM/S
a cluster of findings that characterize a specific abnormal disturbance
SYNDROME
these three measures all disease processes
FREQUENCY, INCIDENCE, and PREVALENCE
rate of occurrence of the pathologic change that is measured over a given period of time (1 year)
FREQUENCY
the number of the newly diagnosed cases of a disease in 1 year
INCIDENCE
the number of people who have given disease at any given point in time
PREVALENCE
the ratio of sick to well persons in a given area
MORBIDITY RATE
the ratio of actual deaths to expected deaths
MORTALITY RATE
TRUE or FALSE: Mortality Rate is the ratio of sick to well persons in a given area
FALSE
TRUE or FALSE: Morbidity Rate is the ratio of actual deaths to expected deaths
FALSE
What are the Two (2) Classifications of Diseases?
STRUCTURAL DISEASE and FUNCTIONAL DISEASE
it is known as organic disease, involves physical and biochemical changes within the cell
STRUCTURAL DISEASE
a function of organ may be impaired, but its structural elements are unchanged
FUNCITONAL DISEASE
it is a basic change in physiologic or functional one
PATHOPHYSIOLOGIC CHANGE
are caused by abnormalities in the genetic make-up of an individual
GENETIC & DEVELOPMENTAL DISEASES
abnormalities due to changes in utero
GENETIC & DEVELOPMENTAL DISEASES
deformities that are evident from birth
CONGENITAL
is derived from the ancestors & a developmental problems that are genetically transferred from either parent to the child
HEREDITARY DISEASE
are caused by internal/external agents that destroy cells or cause the body to injure itself by means of inflammatory process
ACQUIRED INJURIES & INFLAMMATORY DISEASE
a nosocomial infection that results from a particular treatment or therapeutic procedure
IATROGENIC INFECTION
a person who enters healthcare facilities with an infection
COMMUNITY-ACQUIRED INFECTION
known as Physical Changes
LESIONS
abnormalities that caused by genes but influenced by the environment so that they are not manifested later in life
CONGENITAL
most common disorders that caused by unconscious stimulation of the autonomic nervous system
TENSION HEADACHE & FUNCITONAL BOWEL SYNDROME
