Social and Cultural Literacy
Has a sense of personal, social and cultural identity.
Empathises and appreciates diverse beliefs and values.
Shows critical discernment.
Aware of major national and global issues.
Community
Social system with an implied sense of relationship and mutual identity amongst its members.
Continuity
The persistence of cultural elements in a society across time.
Change
Modification of cultural elements in a society.
Social Construct
A socially created aspect of social life.
Citizenship
Rights and duties of members of a nation state.
Socialisation
The process by which individuals learn to become functioning members of society by internalising the roles, norms and values of that society
Micro/Meso/Macro level
Micro - Families and small scale social groups.
Meso - Schools, communities and neighbourhoods.
Macro - the media, the law, workplace and government.
Social Structure
Recurring patterns of behaviour and the ordered interrelationships between different elements of a society.
The self and self-concept
Composed of identities attitudes and beliefs that an individual holds and what defines them as self.
Life stages
Such as Infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age are developmental phases, each with its own biological, physiological and social characteristics, through which individuals pass over the course of time.
Life course
Sequence of socially defined events and roles that the individual enacts over time. It focuses on the connection between individual historical and socioeconomic context in which these individuals lived.
Roles
The behaviour expected of an individual who occupies a given social position or status.
Status
The position a person occupies in a particular setting.
Rights and Responsibilities
Legal, social or ethical principles of freedom or entitlement.
Kinship
Defined relationships between individuals who are commonly thought of as having family ties. (e.g. marriage, adoption). Is one of the most important social principle along with gender and age.
Stereotypes
Generalised views on how we should expect a person of a certain background to behave which leads to potentially misleading assumptions being made about a whole group.
Ethnicity
A shared culture and a way of life. (e.g. Language, religion) It is often a major source of social cohesion as well as social conflict.
