“
Expand on “I could not understand her”
By this use of word choice the writer explains his frustration for not being able to understand his aunt who spoke Gaelic which created a barrier separating them. (Link to what question asks)
Expand on “by the time I had learned a little”
By the use of word choice in “by the time” we can see the connotation of being too late and in this context it suggests that by the time the writer learned Gaelic to try and remove the language barrier, his aunt unfortunately died which separated them even further. (Link to question)
Expand on “he shoggled me centuries back”
By this use of Scot’s dialect we can see that the writer had been shaken mentally just as much as he had been physically shaken. By saying “centuries back” he is explaining that over time we have slowly lost our connection with nature we once had (link to question)
Expand on “so who’s the monster?”
By this use of a rhetorical question we can see that although most people view sharks as monsters and different beings from us. The writer is explaining that we have lost our sense of tradition while the sharks have maintained the same way of living and that we have drifted away from nature (link to question)
Expand on “Clucking contentedly”
By this use of a metaphor we can see that the writer is comparing the tourists to chickens. Just as chickens are simple minded creatures so too the writer is calling the tourists stupid as they all mindlessly run past the dwarf while ignoring him. (Link to question)
Expand on the “ruined temple outside”
This use of a metaphor reinforces the idea of Catholicism and the hypocrisy of the church. Just as a building can be demolished, so too is the dwarf disfigured. “Outside” has the connotations of being left out and in this context the dwarf has been excluded from everyone even though he is outside the church of st Francis who is meant to represent talking to the poor.
Expand on “black figure in in her white cave”
A metaphor is used to describe approaching towards death. Just as a cave is deep and abyssal. So too as the patient moves towards death they are becoming more distanced from life and the visitor. Highlighting the speakers feelings of loss and detachment
