A female cell or egg
Ovum
The process when the sperm reaches the fallopian tubes and penetrates and fertilizes the ovum.

Blastcoyst
The name of the developing baby from the 3rd week of pregnancy through the eighth week.
Embryo
The state of development that begins around the eighth or ninth week of pregnancy and lasts until birth.
Fetus
The babys development during a pregnancy.
Prenatal
A fluid that protects the developing baby.
Amniotic fluid.
The tissue that connects the developing baby to the uterus. Rich in blood vessels that allow nutrients and oxygen to flow to the body.
Placenta
A long tube that connects the baby to the placenta and transmits oxygen.
Umbilical chord
A prenatal test performed by withdrawing a sample of the amniotic fluid.
Amniocenteses
A procedure in which sound waves are used to make a video image of the unborn baby.
Ultra sound.
A prenatal test that uses a sample tissue from the membrane that encases the fetus to check for specific birth defects.
Chronic villi sampling.
A thick white pasty substance covering babies in the uterus that protects them from constant exposure to amniotic fluid.
Vernix
A condition caused by a lack if iron

Fine downy hair that may be present on the forehead back and shoulders of a newborn.
Lanugo
Death of baby after 20 weeks.
Stillbirth.
