Gestational Age
Term used to describe how far along the pregnancy. Measured in weeks, from the first day of the woman’s last menstrual stage to the current date.
Conception age
Conception age used to determine true fetal age and refers to the length of pregnancy from the time of conception.
Ovulation
the release of the eggs from the ovaries.
Fallopian Tube
tube used to travel the eggs.
Cleavage
the splitting of the zygote into two.
Implantation
The process by which a fertilized egg (blastocyst) attaches to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) and begins to grow.
Placenta
An organ that develops during pregnancy, providing nutrients and oxygen to the growing fetus while removing waste products.
Endometrium
the inner lining of the uterus
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone
Hormone that influences the lining of the uterus to thicken
umbilical cord
connects to the placenta and helps provide nutrients and removes waste products.
Lanugo
Fine little hair on the baby
vernix caseosa
a protective creamy substance that protects the baby.
Moro reflex
a normal reflex the baby performs when he tries to catch himself.
Surfactant
a liquid in the lung to help prevent it from collapasing.
Colostrum
first production of the mothers milk which provides tons of nutrients for the baby.
