Do neonates have iron stores?
Yes, enough to last for 1 year.
Due to a lack of iron in breastmilk.
How is bloodflow to the foetus affected during contractions?
Flow is reduced.
What is a normal Apgar score?
> 8
What is the benefit of giving vitamin K at birth?
To prevent haemorrhagic disease of the newborn.
Given via an IM injection.
What is a cephalohaematoma?
Bleeding between the bone periosteum and the epi-cranial aponeurosis.
It does not cross suture lines, and will resolve spontaneously.
What 4 components make up Tetralogy of Fallot?
Ventricular septal defect
Overarching aorta
Pulmonary stenosis
Right ventricular hypertrophy

Males
What are risk factors for neonate death?
Old maternal age
Smoking
Socioeconomic status
Which organism is most likely the cause of early neonatal sepsis?
Group B streptococcus
Could also be due to gram negative organisms.
Why are premature babies more at risk of infection during delivery?
They have an immature immune system.
What is respiratory distress syndrome?
A condition resulting from a deficiency of pulmonary surfactant.
Common in those born prematurely.
How may respiratory distress syndrome present?
Grunting
Intercostal recession
Nasal flaring
Cyanosis
