Pregnancy Complication Flashcards
Labor that occurs after 20th week and before 37th week of gestation
Preterm Labor
What is administered to clients having premature labor to primarily prevent the labor?
Tocolytics
(Magnesium Sulfate, Ritodrine)
A tocolytics medication that is given to the asthmatic patient
Terbutaline hydrochloride
This corticosteroids enhances fetal lung maturity and prevents atelectasis.
Dexamethasone
Prolonged difficult labor and delivery because of problems with the factor in labor (4Ps)
Dystocia
4Ps includes
Fault of the:
- Passenger
- Passages
- Primary Power
- Person.Client
This is encountered in latent phase in labor and this is strong and painful
Hypertonic Uterine Inertia
Contractions characterized by weak and infrequent contractions which are insufficient to dilate the cervix
Hypotonic Uterine Intertia
What should be administered for hypotonic uterine inertia to augment labor?
Oxytocin
Rupture of the membrane before term/labor
Premature Rupture of Membranes
One of the diagnostic test of PROM wherein the change in color of nitrazine paper from yellow to blue color because of neutral to slightly alkaline amniotic fluid
Nitrazine Test
A diagnostic test of PROM wherein the amniotic fluid, a high in sodium content, will assume a ferning pattern when dried on the slide
Ferning Test
A diagnostic test of PROM wherein the direct visualization of fluid from cervical os is the most reliable diagnosis of PROM
Sterile Speculum Examination
Short Labor that lasts for 2 - 3 hours or less
Precipitate labor
2 Categories of Precipitate labor
Dilatation - progressing 5 cm or more per hour
Descent - progressing 5 cm in nulli and 10 cm in multipara
Fetal condition resulting from fetal hypoxia
Fetal Distress
What are the triad symptoms of fetal distress?
- FHR above 160/below 120 BPM
- Meconium stained amniotic fluid
- Fetal hypermobility
How can we correct hypotension in mother? (3 possible interventions)
- Elevate the legs
- Increase oral fluids
- turn the mother to her left side
Excessive bleeding from the genital tract at anytime following delivery up to 6 weeks
Postpartum Hemorrhage
This type of postpartum hemorrhage is when bleeding is present during the 3rd stage of labor to within the 1st 24 hours of delivery.
Primary Postpartum Hemorrhage
Bleeding persists after 24 hours until the 6th week postpartum
Secondary Postpartum Hemorrhage
3 high risk factors of the postpartum hemorrhage
- Uterine Atony “Overdistention of uterus”
- Lacerations
- Retained Placental Membranes
There are two types of postpartum psychosis namely
Acute Postpartum Psychosis and Postpartum Depression
This may lasts for 3 - 6 months and starts at 2 weeks after delivery
Postpartum Depression
