pregnancy and placenta Flashcards
trophoblast develops into placenta
splits into two layers
syncytiotrophablast
cytotrophoblast
syncytiotrophoblast
direct contact with maternal blood
outer layer of multiple fused trophoblast cells
cytotrophoblast
inner layer with several specialised functions: proteolytic enzyme secretion endometrial invasion villous formation angiogenesis
placenta praevia
placenta lies close to/across cervical os
presents with bleeding during pregnancy
normally painless
placental abruption
bleeding in plane between the placenta and uterus
normally painful
bleeding can be revealed (tracks down to cervix) or concealed(contained behind placenta)
prolapsed cord
cord bulges through cervix when membranes rupture
metal head compresses cord during contractions cutting off umbilical flow
pre-eclampsia
complex disease originating in placenta that leads to multiple problems for mother and baby placental vessels fail to develop normally placental perfusion inadequate interpreted as shock from blood loss vasoconstricting substances released maternal: hypertension fluid retention renal damage etc
congenital rickets
due to vit D deficiency
