What questions should we ask?
What stage of pregnancy?
Is it high or low risk?
Do they have any other conditions?
Exercise guidelines for the regular person
150 minutes of moderate physical activity
Or 75 minutes of vigorous activity
Strength/resistance training 2x per week
Exercise guidelines for pregnancy
Exactly the same as the regular person
As doing less causes deconditioning, strength loss, increase risk of back and pelvic pain
Running and strength training fine
Don’t move/bump the bump
Reduce exercise as the bump gets bigger and listen to body
Contraindications
No manual therapy if high risk
Avoid supine exercises, can elevate for bridges etc
Use left side lying and leaning over chair for assessment
No prone exercises
Red flags in pregnancy
Bleeding
Abdominal pain
SOB
Muscle weakness
Dizziness
What should we do if we see red flags?
Contact midwife for same day appt
No Physio until further investigations
