Prefrontal lobes, Cognition and Behaviour Flashcards
What effect does the pre-frontal cortex have on the transmission of information from the sensory cortex to the amygdala?
Mainly dampens it
What does a deficit in the orbitofrontal cortex cause?
Disinhibition
Altered personality and lack of empathy
Socially inappropriate behaviour
Reactive aggression
What does a deficit in the medial prefrontal cortex cause?
Decreased motivation/apathy
Akinesia
Impaired mismatch detection
What does a deficit in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex cause?
Reduced attentional control and perseveration
Impaired executive function
What type of receptors are dopamine receptors?
G-protein coupled
Where are D2 receptors found?
Limbic areas, midbrain and parts of the cerebral cortex.
What is the dopamine hypothesis for schizophrenia?
Overactivity of mesolimbic dopamine system causes +ve symptoms and -ve caused by PFC damage
What is the neurodevelopmental hypothesis for schizophrenia?
PFC should modulate stress but if improperly activated during adolescence can cause -ve symptoms.
The deficit in the PFC reduces feedback inhibtion to dopaminergic neurons and causes excess dopamine and +ve symptoms.
What is the glutamate hypothesis for schizophrenia?
Similar symptoms to PCP drug which blocks NMDA receptors so maybe same mechanism?
