Preface and Introduction Themes Flashcards
Bloom’s taxonomy three types of thinking
(1) Knowledge/Comprehension
(2) Application/Analysis
(3) Synthesis/Evaluation
What does it called when an organism’s adaptation to its environment?
Evolution
The process of change that has transformned life on Earth from its earliest beginnings to the diversity of organisms living today
What are the central activities of biology?
Posing questions about the living world and seeking science-based answers
- How a single tiny cell become a tree or a dog?
- How the human mind works?
- How the different form of life in a forest interact?
What is life?
We recognize life by what living things do
More in the next chapters
What are the properties of life?
There are seven
- Order Sunflower
- Regulation Jackrabbit’s ears
- Evolutionary adaptation Pygmy sea horse camouflaged
- Response to the environment The Venus flytrap catching preys
- Reproduction
- Energy processing Nectar fuels the hummning bird to fly and work; photosynthesis
- Growth and development Genes information inheriting
What are the levels of biological organization?
- From the global scale to the microscopic scale
- There are ten
- The Biosphere
- Ecosystems
- Communities
- Populations
- Organisms
- Organs and Organ Systems
- Tissues
- Cells
- Organelles
- Molecules
Differentiates tissues, cells, organelles and molecules
What is the biosphere?
The biosphere consists of all life on Earth and all the places where life exists
The lands, the oceans, the atmosphere, the Earth’s below surface
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem consists of all the living things in a particular area, along with all the nonliving components of the environment with which life interacts, such as soil, water, atmospheric gases and light
The ecosystem and biosphere?
What is the relationship between ecosystems and the biosphere?
Combined together
All of Earth’s ecosystems combined make up the biosphere
What is the community?
The entire array of organisms inhabiting a particular ecosystem is called a biological community
The relationship of the communities, species and populations?
What is a species?
Each of living forms of life is called a species
Plants, animals, fungi, bacteria
What is a population?
A population consists of all the individuals of a species living within the bounds of a specified area
A community has the populations that inhabit a particular area
What are organisms?
Individual living things are called organisms
maple tree, deer, frog, beetle
What are Organs and Organ Systems?
The organs of humans, other complex animals and plants are organized into organ systems
Each a team of organs that cooperate in a larger function
Organs consitst of multiple tissues
- The digestive system includes tongue, stomach and intestines
- Stem and roots of plant organs
What are tissues?
Each tissues is made up of a group of cells that work together, performing a specialized function
