Prediction Of Products Flashcards
Single Displacement
When one metal displaces another metal in a compound, or when a non metal displaces non metal in a compound. Element + Compound > element + compound
A+ BX > AX + B
X+ BY > BX + Y
What are examples of Single Displacement?
Active Metal will displace metallic Ion in a compound of a less active metal.
Active Metal Reacting with water To give A metallic hydroxide and hydrogen gas
Active Metals displace in Acids
Halogens will displace in less active halogens.
Double Displacement
The positive and negative ions of two compounds are interchanged
Compound + Compound > Compound + Compound
AX + BY > AY + BX
What are types of Double Displacement Reactions?
Neutralization reaction:
Acid + Base > Salt and Water
Salt and Acid:
Salt + Acid > Salt of Acid and New Volatile Acid
Salt + Acid or Base > decomposable compound
Some soluble salts combine to form an insoluble salt and a soluble salt
Decomposition
When energy Is supplied, compounds can decompose to form similar compounds and or elements
AX > A + X
What are types of Decomposition?
If acids are heated > water + acidic oxide
Metallic hydroxide is heated > metallic oxide and water
Metallic carbonate when heated > metallic oxide and co2
Metallic Chlorate > Metallic Chloride and Oxygen
Most Metallic Oxides are stable but few decompose with heat
Some Compounds decompose by electricity into their elements
Synthesis
Two simple substances combine to form a complex substance
Element + Element > compound
Compound …
A + X > AX
What are examples of Synthesis?
Combination of Elements
Combination of An Acid Anhydride with Water to get an Acid
Combination of a Basic Anhydride with water to get a base
Combination of a Metal of a Basic Oxide with a nonmetal of an acidic Oxide to get a salt
