Predator 1 Flashcards
double threat
Any move you make that presents your opponent with two problems at the same time.
fork
a move where one of your pieces attacks two enemy pieces at the same time.
discovered attack
occurs when you move one of your pieces out of the way of another so that both of them make separate attacks against your opponent.
pin
when two of your opponent’s pieces are on the same line and you place an attacker so that it runs through both of them. The piece in between is a lesser value piece and thus does not move to avoid exposing the piece behind.
ex. bishop –> rook king
skewer
when two of your opponent’s pieces are on the same line and you place an attacker so that it runs through both of them. The opponent’s behind piece is of lesser value and so is taken when the more valuable in between piece moves out of the way.
ex. bishop –> King, Rook
loose piece
a piece that has no protection
forcing moves
moves that force your opponent to pick from a small set of possible replies. (check, captures, and mate threats are known as forcing moves).
strategy
when you move to improve the quality of position, arrange your pieces so they have more freedom of movement and denying the same freedoms to your opponent or coordinating your pieces so they are aimed at the same sector of the board , rather than win your opponents pieces
tactic
a move that wins your opponent’s pieces.
combination
when any number of forcing moves enables you to pefrorm a tactic.
