precipitation reactions Flashcards
precipitation reaction definition
where two ionic solutions are mixed and an insoluble precipitate is formed.
precipitation reaction general formula
AB + CD = AD + CB
forming precipitates
atoms are exchanged between compounds. When soluble ionic compounds are mixed, the ions are swapped between the dissolved compounds and result in one compound forming a precipitate
precipitate definition
solid that forms and sinks to the bottom of a solution
aqueous
in water
spectator ion
ion that does not take part in a chemical reaction. they remain unchanged and are present in the solution.
solubility
how much a compound appears to dissolve
forming word and formula equations
the last word/part from both compounds swap places with the other. MUST balance formula equations
forming ionic equations
take only the precipitate and ions that formed it and write equation with only them. (spectator ions are left out.)
why does a precipitate form
forms because the compound is insoluble, meaning the attraction between the ions is greater than the attraction between water molecules.
