Precipitation, Air Masses, Fronts Flashcards
Sleet formed?
Rain falls through a layer of freezing air.
Rain formed?
A cloud produces rain when a water droplet becomes a certain size.
Snow formed?
Temps so cold water vapor changes to solid.
Hail formed?
When updraft carry rain high in clouds, the raindrop freezes.
How do air masses and fronts relate to each other?
An air mass is an large body of air where temp and moisture content start. A front is an area where 2 air masses meet
M air mass
Maritime, forms over water, wet
c air mass
Continental, forms over land, dry
P air mass
Polar, Forms over polar regions , cold
T air mass
tropical, develops over tropics, warm
Cold front
Cold air moves under warm air and pushes it up, heavy rain thunder and snow
Warm front
Warm air moves under cold air and warm air replaces cold air. Some rain, warm
Occluded
Warm air mass caught between 2 cold air mass, cold temps snow
Stationary
Cold air mass meets a warm air mass
