Precipitation Flashcards
What is the best way to identify an embedded CB in flight?
Using a weather radar.
Define: drizzle.
Rain with droplet size of less than 0.5 mm.
Drizzle falls from stratus clouds, and is associated with low visibility.
State the intensity of precipitation falling from:
(a) stratiform clouds
(b) cumuliform clouds
(a) steady
(b) showery
Define: showery precipitation.
Precipitation of high intensity and short duration.
State the cloud types that produce:
(a) showers of precipitation
(b) continuous precipitation
(a) CU, CB, TCU
(b) NS
In which cloud types can hail be produced?
In CBs.
Define: precipitation.
⬥ rain
⬥ snow
⬥ sleet
⬥ drizzle
⬥ hail
What type of precipitation do SC and AS clouds usually produce?
Light rain.
What type of precipitation do NS clouds usually produce?
⬥ snow
⬥ sleet
⬥ rain
Where can SCWDs occur?
⬥ clouds
⬥ fog
⬥ precipitation
What type of precipitation do ST clouds usually produce?
⬥ drizzle
⬥ ice crystals
⬥ snow grains
What type of precipitation is associated with Föhn winds?
No precipitation is associated with Főhn winds; they are dry.
State which cloud types and what kind of precipitation intensity would an observer see with a frontal depression passing overhead.
NS (continuous rain) → ST (possibly drizzle) → CB (showery rain).
What is a requirement for large water droplets to develop?
Large vertical extent of the cloud.
What type of precipitation is most likely to fall from clouds containing only water?
If the cloud contains only water (i.e. no ice crystals), chances are it doesn’t extend vertically very much. The cloud that best fits the description is stratus, which typically produces drizzle.
