Standard precautions Aka
Universal precautions
All blood & body fluids treated as potential contaminants
Wash hands before/after each patient contact
Different set of gloves w/ each patient.
If splashing of fluids is likely, wear mask or face shielf or both & gown.
Airborne precautions
mask is required
Measles, varicella (chicken pox) or TB
Droplet precautions
Mask or face shield or both required when within 3 ft.
contact of conjunctivae or mucous membranes of nose/mouth with large-particle droplets generated from coughing, sneezing, talking
Flu, meningitis, pneumonia, mumps, rubella
Contact precautions
gown & gloves required when pathogens transmitted by direct person-to-person contact or person-to-object contact.
Cdiff, E-coli, herpes simplex, herpes zoster, MRSA, VRE
MRSA
at risk in hospitals: debilitated/elderly, prolonged hospitalization, surgery, multiple antibiotics, critical care
