Precautions Flashcards
Anterior hip
NO…
I. Hip extension – stepping backwards
ii. Prone positioning – laying on stomach
iii. External rotation – toes turning outward
iv. Abduction – crossing legs
Posterior hip
NO…
I. Hip flexion > 90 – bending forward/knee up
ii. Internal rotation – toes turning inward
iii. Adduction – crossing legs
Sternal
*heart pillow
The “3 P’s”
NO…
I. Pushing *cannot use arm to push during sit to stand!
ii. Pulling
iii. Lifting more than 5 pounds for 8 weeks (gallon of milk ~7)
iv. Shoulder flexion >90 or horizontal abd w/exten - tube
Spinal
*move in a tube, be mindful of brace “BLT” No… I. Bending ii. Lifting iii. Twisting
Abdominal
No…
I. Heavy lifting
ii. Bending forward
Sinus
No… I. Nose blowing sneezing/coughing with mouth open ii. Using drinking straws iii. Bending over – keep head above heart iv. Heavy lifting v. Bearing down/pushing
Knee arthroplasty
flexion/extension okay, but try to limit excess motion, and no rotation of knee
shoulder arthroplasty
no... heavy lifting driving passive ER resisted IR
“no reaching behind back, across the body to put a seatbelt on, heavy lifting”
Peripheral nerve injury and carpal tunnel
Sensory testing!
education on sensory return: pain/temp first, stereognosis last
carpal tunnel: symptoms worse at night - sleep hygiene!
UE fractures and arthritis
strength, pain, pinch, orthoses management
pt education: adaptive devices, prevent deformity, maximize function
Stroke
connection between brain and muscles is disrupted
encourage use and input on the hemi side (visual, tactile)
positioning in bed - hemi arm on pillow
lean: “your brain is playing tricks on you” - sit next to them, use a mirror or pole to center them
SCI
preserve tenodesis - stretch fingers out only when wrist is flexed, and curl fingers into a fist only when wrist is extended (DO NOT DO OPPOSITE)
TBI - rancho levels
- No response
- Generalized response
- Localized response
- Confused, agitated
- Confused, inappropriate
- Confused, appropriate
- Automatic, appropriate
- Purposeful, appropriate
MS
progressive
might have dizziness, weakness
education: energy conservation, adaptive equip
avoid heat!!!!
GBS
weakness, paresthesia
prevent DVTs - move limbs
energy conservation, BP
eventually strength training
