Precalculus Test 1 Flashcards
Whole Numbers
0, 1, 2, 3…
Natural(or counting) numbers
1, 2, 3…
Integers
…-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3…
Rational Numbers
Anything that can be written as a fraction
Irrational Numbers
Cannot be written as a fraction. EXAMPLE: Pi, i, Square root of 13
If a & b are real, then a + b = real
Addition Closure
If a & b are real, ab = real
Multiplication Closure
a + b = b + a
Communitive Addition
ab = ba
Communitive Multiplication
(a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
Addition Associative
a(bc) = (ab)c
Multiplication Associative
a + 0 = a
Identity Addition
a(1) = a
Identity Multiplication
a + (-a) = 0
Inverse Addition
a(1/a) = 1
Inverse Multiplication
a(b+c) = ab + ac
Distributive
Product of Powers
Add Exponents with same base; Multiply coefficients
EXAMPLE: x^2*x^3 = x^5
EXAMPLE: (2x^3)(3x^4) = 6x^7
Power to a Power
Multiply Exponents
EXAMPLE: (x^2)^3 = x^6
Power of a Product
(ab)^m = a^m*b^m
