India is state-nation
State is a tangible concept while nation is a intangible concept
Not every state is a nation. Not every nation is a state.

 - State :  Independent, sovereign govt exercising control over a specific geographical boundary. Hence they are bound by location, sovereignty, power etc. 
  - Nation : Nation is a large body of people sharing a common history, origin, culture, ethnicity or language. They are bound by culture, feeling, emotions. 

Nation state: A nation state is territorial unit with sovereign govt where people are bound by religion/ culture/ race/ history etc. But they are bound by a single factor. India is called state ation as people by binded by 100s of factors.

State-Nation: a territorially bounded sovereign polity—i.e., a state—that is ruled in the name of a community of citizens who identify themselves as a nation
Eg: India [India is a state nation because of its huge diversity. Along with the political unity (land, govt, law); India also possess different nations inside a state. Indians identify themselves as maharashtrian as well as Indians].
