Pre-Trip Flashcards
Start
Front of vehicle:
o Low beams, high beams, left turn signal, right turn signal, 4-way flashers, clearance lights
Rear of vehicle: o Taillights, brake lights, left turn signal, right turn signal, 4-way flashers, clearance lights
Air Supply System Checks
- Air leak check
- Low air pressure warning devices check
- Parking Valve check
Air leak check
Chock the wheels.
Before you start this exercise, you must tell the examiner what the correct air leakage rate is for the type of vehicle you are testing in. Failure to do so will result in automatic disqualification at conclusion of Air Brake Test. “The air leakage rate for this vehicle is no more that 3 psi loss in one minute.”
1
Tell the examiner “my air pressure is below 90 psi, and I will do a Safety Start to charge the air until the governer cuts off.”
2
Start the bus, engage the Fast Idle. Identify when the governor has cut off, then tell the examiner the actual air pressure that is displayed. You must hear the cut off or notice that the needle has stopped moving
3
Turn off the engine and return the ignition switch to the on position.
4
Release the parking brake. Fully apply the foot brake and hold for one minute while watching the air gauge. Tell the examiner “I lost no more than 3 psi of air pressure within one minute.” You must supply your own timing device.
Low air pressure warning devices check
1
Tell the examiner “the low air pressure warning devices must activate before it drops below 55 psi.”
2
Fan off the air pressure by applying and releasing the service brakes until the devices activate, then tell the examiner the actual air pressure that is displayed once the warning devices activate.
Parking Brake Valve Check
1
Tell the examiner “the parking brake valve should close (pop out) at approximately 40 psi.”
2
Continue to fan the air pressure until the parking brake valve closes, then tell the examiner the actual air pressure that is displayed once the parking brake valve closes.
In Cab (bus must be running)
1
Remove chocks:
o Remove the chocks before preforming Safety Start.
2
Safety Start:
Latch seatbelt, verify parking brake is popped out, turn air switch on, turn ignition switch on, press/hold start button to start engine, turn fast idle switch on after about 30 seconds. WATCH FOR ABS LIGHT ON DASH WHEN STARTING
3
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS):
Tell the examiner when the ABS warning light illuminates and turns off.
4
Oil Pressure Gauge:
“Located in the engine compartment, no warning lights on display”
5
Temperature Gauge:
“Located in the engine compartment, no warning lights on display”
6
DEF Gauge:
o “Gauge shows more than 1/8 of a tank and no regen needed”
7
Voltmeter Gauge:
o “System is charging, warning light turned off.”
8
Air Pressure Supply Gauges: o “Gauges are working, governor cut-out is between 120-140 psi.”
9
Dash Lights:
o Demonstrate dash indicators-4-way flashers, left turn signal, right turn signal and high beams.
10
Horn:
o Demonstrate horn.
11
Heater & Defroster:
o Demonstrate heater and defroster.
12
Mirrors:
“Clean, not damaged and properly adjusted securely mounted.” Mention exterior side-view mirrors and all interior mirrors.
13
Windshield:
o “Clean, not damaged, and there are no illegal stickers to obstruct vision.”
14
Windshield Wipers:
“Arms and blades are securely mounted, operate correctly & smoothly and not damaged.” Demonstrate washer fluid.
15
Seat Belt:
o Demonstrate fastening belt. “Latches, adjusts, securely mounted and the belt is not ripped or frayed.”
16
Parking Brake:
o With parking brake on, place bus in gear and gently pull against the brake to ensure it holds.
17
Service Brake:
With the parking brake off, slowly drive forward at 2MPH and gently apply the brakes while firmly gripping the steering wheel. “Steering wheel did not veer to the left or right. Bus stops when brakes applied.”
18
Passenger Lift:
Verbalize how the lift is operated.
“Not leaking, has no damage or missing parts. It is fully stowed and latched securely”
19
Doors (Front & Rear):
o Demonstrate opening and closing both doors while mentioning “doors operate smoothly and close securely and the step lights work.”
In-cab continued (shut the bus down)
1
Exit the seat to inspect the following: “Entry doors and hinges are secure and not damaged. Seals are intact. Handrails are secure with no loose or missing bolts or screws. Entry steps are clear and step treads are not loose or excessively worn.”
Emergency & Safety Equipment:
