Purpose of Pre Test
Prepare examinee for examination
Obtain information to develop R/C Questions
Establish rapport and empathy w/ examinee
Stimulate the examinee(Show them the test works)
Obtain information for post-test if needed
Typically 45mins-1.5hrs
Steps of Pre Test Interview
Meet with case investigator or whoever is requesting test
Prepare for examination
Perform functionality test on instrument if necessary
Meet with examinee
Have examinee complete Communication Form
Give examinee Scan Questionnaire
Give examinee “Rights Document”
Observe non-verbal behavior throughout the interview
Explain polygraph instrument to examinee
Explain polygraph process
Discuss countermeasures and the internet
Comply with Miranda Rights

Comply w/ polygraph rights (voluntary test, right to refuse to answer)
Have examinee sign Consent Form
Get complete background information
Review case facts (do not ask if examinee committed crime)
Minimize and rationalize relevant issue
Develop and read relevant questions to examinee
Develop, give reason for, and read norm questions to be asked
Develop, give reasons for, and read control questions to be asked
Determine if examinee is mentally, physically, and emotionally fit to take test
Attach components
Give 8 final instructions
Administer the exam
