Pre-Term Terminology

A

Term - 37 weeks plus
Pre-term - 34 - 36 +6 days
Moderately pre-term - 32 - 33+6 days
Very pre-term - less than 32 weeks
Extremely preterm - less than 25 weeks
Non viable (Miscarriage) - less than 22 weeks

Levels of Hospital Care

A

NICU - highest level of care for neonates
LNU - local neonatal unit (around 27/28 weeks plus) step down from NICU)
SCU - special care unit (around 32/33 weeks)

What to do if Gestation Less than 22 Weeks

A
  • Do not start resus
  • Will find the preterm presentation blanket in the maternity pack

Level of Care when Gestation 22 to 23+6

A
  • Chest compressions are not recommended
  • Mostly just support ventilations, airway and maintain temperature
  • Prioritise temperature first with these babies then A and B
  • Could potentially put them in a clear plastic bag straight away and keep them there near a heat source if possible
