Pre Solo Written Flashcards
What are the limitations on a student pilot?
A student pilot cannot act in command of an aircraft:
- That is carrying passengers
- Carrying property for compensation
- For compensation, hire, or business
- On an international flight
- With a flight surface visibility less than 3 statute miles during the day or 5 statute miles at night
- when there is no visual reference to the surface
- in a manner contrary to limitations placed in the logbook by an authorized instructor
FAR 61.89
When may a student fly to another airport without a logbook endorsement by the instructor for that particular flight?
Never unless it is an emergency. FAR 61.93
How recently must the student’s logbook have been endorsed to allow solo flight?
Within 90 Days
CAFF rules require that student pilot must fly with an instructor at least every ______ days to fly
14 days
CAFF rules require that a student pilot may not fly more than _______ without flying with an instructor.
3 local solo flights
CAFF rules allow student pilots to fly solo at night only after they have received the required duel. TRUE or FALSE
FALSE
CAFF rules allow student pilots to fly solo cross-country, spend the night, and return the next day.
True or False
False
As a solo student pilot, what document(s) must you carry at all times?
A minimum of a 3rd class medical certification, student certificate, government issued ID, and their logbook with a solo endorsement.
As a solo student pilot, what document(s) must you carry on a solo cross-country flight?
A minimum of a 3rd class medical certification, student certificate, government issued ID, and their logbook with a cross country solo endorsement as well as current sectionals and chart supplements for the area
What do the numbers at the end of the runway indicate?
Magnetic heading of the runway direction rounded up to the nearest 10th with the zero removed
What is the traffic pattern altitude at Yolo County Airport? What direction are the traffic patterns
1100ft AGL. Left traffic for RWY 34. Right traffic for RWY 16
What is the airspace that Yolo County Airport falls under at the surface? What airspace are you in at traffic pattern altitude?
Class G airspace at the surface to 700’ AGL. Class E Airspace up to but not including 18000’ MSL
What are the potential conflicts that one should consider when flying at Yolo County? Is it advisable to fly directly over the airport? Why or why not?
Pilots should be vigilant to people entering the pattern incorrectly. Parachute operations take place east of the field and must be avoided. Because of the parachute operations, the skydive planes descend quickly into the pattern and so the pilot should be aware of spacing in the pattern.
Where does parachute activity take place at the airport?
To the east of the airport
What are the minimum fuel requirements for a student to fly solo at yolo county airport?
Full tanks
What is the runway length at Yolo Airport?
6000’ x 100’
What is the runway length at Yolo Airport?
6000’ x 100’
What is the runway length at Yolo Airport?
6000’ x 100’
Describe how you would re-enter the traffic pattern at Yolo County Airport after flying in the practice area
Wind direction and current traffic will determine which runway is in use. If landing on RWY 16, position slightly to the south of midfield for a 45 degree entry to a right downwind leg. If landing on RWY 34, position slightly north of midfield for a 45 degree entry to a left downwind leg.
Why do you need to use right rudder during takeoff and climb?
P Factor, which is caused by the ‘asymmetric propeller loading’ or essentially when the downward moving propeller takes a bigger ‘bite’ of air than the upward moving propeller.
Torque, which is caused by the engine and propeller rotating to the right creating more friction on the left tire causing it to move to the left
Gyroscopic precession, which is when you apply a force to a spinning disc (like the propeller) the resultant force is felt 90 degrees in the direction of the rotating disc
Lastly, Spiralling Slipstream which is caused by the air accelerated around the fuselage moving in a corkscrew shape hitting the left side of the aircraft’s tail causing it to yaw to the left
What are the legs of the traffic pattern called?
Departure, Crosswind, Downwind, Base, and Final
When do you use carburetor heat and why?
On descent or on reduction of power below 2000RPM to avoid carburetor icing/and or shocking cooling of the engine
What are the regulations concerning alcohol consumption when acting as the pilot of a civil aircraft?
The pilot in command must not have consumed alcohol within the last 8 hours before flying, must not have a blood alcohol content of .04 and must also not be under the influence or affected by alcohol or other drugs (i.e. must not be hungover or in any state that could impair ADM) FAR 91.17
What are the requirements concerning use of safety belts and shoulder harnesses for pilots.
Pilots must wear a seatbelt and harness (if harness is available) during take off and landing and during cruise if at crew member station. FAR 91.105
What are the requirements concerning the use of safety belts and shoulder harnesses for passengers?
Pilots are responsible for briefing passengers on the use of seatbelts and ensures the seat belt and harness (if harness is available) is properly used during take off and landing FAR 91.107
What is the runway length at Yolo Airport?
6000’ x 100’
