pre-prosthetic surgery Flashcards
What different excisional soft tissue procedures can be carried out pre-prosthetics?
Frenectomy
Frenoplasty
Papillary hyperplasia
Flabby ridges
Denture endured hyperplasia
Maxillary tuberosity reduction
Retromolar pad reduction
What ridge extension procedures can be carried out pre-prosthetics?
Vestibuloplaty - either maxillary or mandibular
What is a pasty procedure?
A formation of a specific part
Give 4 examples of hard tissue procedures that can be carried out pre-prosthetics?
Removal of retained teeth/roots/pathology
Ridge defect correction (alveoplasty)
Maxillary/mandibular tori
Exostoses - benign bone tumour
What is the purpose of a vestibuloplasty?
To increase the depth of the vestibule, the space between the teeth and the lips or cheeks
It improves the stability of dentures
What is an alveoplasty?
Reshaping or smoothing of the alveolar ridge in preparation for denture placement
What are the different types of augmentation procedures pre prosthetics?
Autografts
Allografts
Xenografts
Synthetic grafts
What is an autograft?
When bone is taken from the patient to a new location
What is an allograft?
When bone is taken from other humans
What are Xenografts?
When bone is taken from animals eg - Bio-Oss
Describe synthetic grafts
Less accepted but becoming more effective
No risk of transmission of infection
eg - beta tricalcium phosphate
What other hard tissue procedures may be carried out pre-prosthetics?
Implants
Inferior alveolar nerve relocation
