Total Knee Replacement - Indication, benefits, risks
Indication:
- OA, severe, pain, RA, traumatic injury
Benefits:
- Significant reduction in knee pain
- improved mobility and functionality of knee
- Enhanced quality of life and ability to engage in daily activities
Risks:
- Infection, PE, VTE
- Neurovascular damage, fracture of bone during surgery
- Instability or losening of artificial joint over time
- Stiffness or loss of range of motion in the knee
TKR - Duration of surgery, recovery time, surgery anaesthetic info
Duration of surgery:
- Typically 1-2 hours
Recovery:
- Hospital 1-4 days
- Normal activities in 6 weeks to 3 months with rehab
- avoid twisting knee and bending down as much as possible
Surgery:
- Typical GA or spinal, incision down knee, cut away parts of damaged bone
- onsert prosthesis
Joint Arthroscopy: indication, benefits, risks
Indication:
- Diagnosis and treatment of join problems e.g. ACL, meniscus, cartilage
Benefits:
- Minimally invasive
- Allows diagnosis adn treatment of joint tissues without open surgery
- Reduced risk of complications, faster recovery time and less post op pain
Risks:
- Infection, VTE, PE, neurovascualr damage
- Persistent pain, stiffness and development of arthritis
Joint arthroscopy: duration, recovery time, day of surgery
Duration:
- 30 minutes to hour
Recovery time:
- Light activity in days to week, full activity in few weeks may need physio
- Usually day case
Day of surgery:
- Usually GA, (LA if needed)
- small camera inserted (arthroscope) and surgical instruements through small incision

- ACL repir for instability, sports injuries/trauma
Benefits:
- Restores knee stability + funciton, prevents further joint damage, return to sports
Risks:
- Infection, DVT, PE, bleeding + haematoma, Neurovascular damage
- Graft failure, persistent pain or stiffness
Duration: 1-2 hours
Recovery time: few months full
- Initial immobilisation and protected weight bearing
- Physio for strength and ROM

Indication:
- gallstones, cholecystectomy, other conditions
Benefits:
- relief of symptoms, prevent complications e.g.
