The period of history before the Industrial Revolution which took place around 1750-1850
Description of the Social class
Upper class= wealthy and landowners
Real tennis/ fox hunting
Lower class= working on the land and poor
Mob football and bare knuckle fighting
Description of gender
Women considered by men to be the weaker sex
Women couldn’t do dangerous or violent sports
Upper class women could do gentle and civilised sports
Lower class women competed in the smock race
Description of law and order
Little laws
No centralised police
Description of education and literacy
Upper class had a better education so played games with written complex rules
Lower class mostly uneducated and played sports with much less rules
Description of availability of time
Upper class hardly had work so could play sports for a much longer period of time
Lower class had work on every day for long hours and could only play on festival days
Description of availability of money
Upper class had a much higher disposable income
They could afford much better equipment
Lower class hardly any income
Only play sports with inexpensive equipment
Description of type and availability of transport
Roads were poor however upper class could use horse and carriage so could travel further than the lower class
Lower class only had the chance to walk so sports were very localised

Pedestrianism- competitive running or walking
Lower class competitors
Cricket- more upper class
Lower class payed by upper class to play
Archery- upper class sport played by women and men
Bare knuckle fighting- done by lower class for prize money
Cock fighting- played by both upper and lower class around animal fighting
Mob football- played by the lower class had no rules except for no murder
Real tennis- played by upper class very complicated rules
Smock racing- played by lower class women to win a prize of a smock
