Variable
A symbol that represents an unknown value.
Common examples:
x,y,z.
Expression
A combination of numbers, variables, and operations.
Example:
2a+3b−5
Term
Parts of an expression separated by + or - signs.
Example: In 3x+4, the terms are 3x and 4.
Factor
Numbers or variables multiplied together in a term.
Example: In 5xy, the factors are 5, x, and y.
Coefficient
The numerical part of a term with variables.
Example: In 6z, the coefficient is 6.
Sum
The result of adding terms together.
Example:
a+b is the sum of
a and b.
Product
The result of multiplying factors.
Example: The product of 2 and 3 is 2×3=6
Equation
A mathematical statement showing that two expressions are equal.
Example: 2x+3=7
Reciprocal
The inverse of a number or expression.
Example: The reciprocal of 4 is
1/4
