Practitioner Exam Flashcards

Q

What is the process in healing? The process of healing?

A

There is no process of healing.
There is nothing to be healed, only Truth to be revealed. P1/T1/C4/Q3
Healing is not creating perfection but revealing the perfect idea already present.
It is a revelation through the thought of the practitioner to the thought of the patient.
The process in healing is a movement in consciousness in that the client moves from need and want to fulfillment and realization of his/her perfectness.
The process in healing is the mental work and the time it takes the practitioner to convince himself of the perfectness of his patient; and the length of time it takes the patient to realize this perfectness.” (SOM 212.4) P2/T1/C7b/Q2: P2/T2/C11/Q5

Q

What is the purpose of Treatment? Is it different from prayer?

A

To change a thought; to change a condition. P1/T1/C3/Q5:

To change a condition by allowing the God within to reveal itself in another, preferable manner. P1/T2/C16/Q3:

All treatment is prayer; not all prayer is treatment. Treatment is affirmative Prayer. “If . . . prayer is a recognition of Spirit’s Omniscience, Omnipotence, and Omnipresence, and a realization of man’s unity with Spirit, then . . . prayer is a spiritual treatment. If it is speaking to or pleading with a separate being with power to grant or not grant a wish, it is not treatment. P1/T2/C16/Q1

Q

What is a Spiritual Truth? Spiritual re-education of the mind?

A

A Spiritual Truth is a Truth about our Divine nature. What we really are. It is that which is as infinite and unlimited as Spirit. The Spiritual Truth of anything is the God-essence of it, and may appear as its opposite. For example, the Spiritual Truth of lack is unlimited abundance. P1/T1/C5/Q2
Spiritual re-education of the mind is understanding, knowing, and accepting the Spiritual Truth of one’s self. P1/T1/C8/Q4

Q

What are the two distinct methods of treatment; how do they differ?

A

(SOM 170.3) Argumentative and Realization. “Argumentative is a process of mental reasoning in which the practitioner argues to him/herself about the patient” (SOM 170.4). “The realization method is one whereby the practitioner realizes within him/herself without the necessity of step-by-step building up a conclusion—the perfect state of the patient” (SOM 170.5) P1/T1/C3/Q1

Q

What does Holmes mean when he says, “Now we can forget all about the Law and know there is nothing but the Word”?

A

Forget about all else, the Law works automatically, let our word be spoken with a deep inner realization of that great Presence, of love, beauty, peace, poise, and power, and the point of our own consciousness. P1/T3/C22/Q5

Q

How would you expand on this statement in the light of establishing rapport? “When deep calls unto deep, deep will answer deep.” (HTU 147.1)

A

All wisdom is at the center of the client and the Practitioner. One is as deep as the other. The depth of expression is the depth of perception.
(The Practitioner can make clear to the client anything that is clear to him/her. As the Practitioner works from a desire to establish good, sound rapport with the client, there is a response from the client at a corresponding level of understanding that contributes to it happening.) P2/T1/C4/Q2

How can the consciousness of the Practitioner be empowered, when doing treatment, by combination of technique & feeling?

A

A. -Well done, full Step One–magnificence of God.
-Clear Step Two that unites God and the Practitioner gives the Practitioner a feeling of well-being, peace and power.
-Complete Step Three–image of the desired results is complete and the feeling is one of fulfillment.
-Each Step builds upon the one previous, consciousness is empowered process, confidence builds. P2/T1/C8/Q8

What the Divine has implanted cannot be uprooted; it can only appear to be covered up. Spiritual mind practice is an uncovering of the Divine Nature.” (HTU 57.2) P2/T1/C5/Q1

A practitioner does not try to suggest, hypnotize, or mentally influence; he simply seeks to know that man is now a spiritual being, and he holds to that belief no matter what the appearance may be.” (SOM 179.2) P2/T2/C11/Q4

Q

What is the difference between a mystic and a psychic?

A

A psychic deals only with human thoughts, receiving impressions and subjective pictures from human minds and the Collective Unconscious, or relative truth.
A mystic is one who senses the Divine Presence. A mystic does not read human thought but intuitively senses the Thought of God, Reality, or Absolute Truth. P1/T3/C23/Q3

Q

How are the concepts of healing, wholeness, and spiritual perfection related?

A

The only thing that can ever require healing is the perception that healing is required. There is nothing to be healed, only Truth to be revealed. Believing something needs healing is to confuse the condition with the Spiritual Truth of Wholeness.
Healing is not a process but a revelation of wholeness always present, which cannot be created or destroyed.
Wholeness is the only state of being which the cosmos allows. God is One. The Universe is a Unit. Oneness is inclusivity. Nothing is outside of God. P2/T1/C2a/Q2
Metaphysical perfection is a standard of consciousness: the consciousness of lacking nothing, in which consciousness we perceive unbroken wholeness and may experience “having it all.” The standard of perfection upon which all practitioner work is founded is a consciousness of total inclusivity = wholeness. A

Feelings are the inner responses to our thoughts, while emotions are the outer expressions of our responses to our thoughts (feelings in motion). It is our thoughts/beliefs that create our reality, but only to the degree of feeling behind them. Therefore in treatment it is the feeling behind the treatment, behind the belief, the Spiritual Truth, that will create the demonstration. P1/T1/C4/Q4

Q

According to your reading in The Science of Mind, what is memory? Why is it important?

A

Memory is an unconscious operation of what was once a conscious thought. It is the storehouse of all ideas that have passed through, in this case, the individual mind. Memory is important because it is active and these ideas or thoughts that pass through it come back. Thus, it is through memory and the perceptions of what is remembered that we arrive at our beliefs about reality and life and so create it. So that by changing the perception of a memory we change the reaction or thought attached to it and so change the condition of life attached to it. P1/T1/C9/Q5

3: The process of creation is that all begins and ends in God. A thought, or word, automatically makes an impression on the “stuff” of creation, and that “stuff” takes form as the effect of thought. (Seed, soil, plant, is a good example.) P1/T2/C13/Q3

To receive a greater good we must develop a state of mind in which that good is normal for us. The Law of Cause and Effect acts upon this belief and our good is automatically drawn to us.

There is a power for good in the universe greater than ourselves and you can use it now. This is God’s gift to you. What you decide to do with it is your gift to God.

What is the solution when we find ourselves confronted by the problem of not knowing what to do?

Q

Why is it important to use Critical Thinking on the definitions of the words we habitually utilize?

A

The meanings of words shift and change, definitions or intentions become fuzzy or lost, and words are used carelessly. We look at the beliefs behind the words and what they mean to us to understand why and what we are creating in our lives and how to change it. If we use words in ways idiosyncratic to ourselves, we may not communicate clearly with others and create unintended consequences.(P1/C3, p.3-9)P1/T1/C3/Q4

What is the key to our freedom?

A

The power of choice is the key to our freedom. As God is the life within us, we have access to all the attributes of God. We are free to call forth any of the qualities of God at any time, and the Law responds by producing the “form” of the choices we make. P1/T3/C24/Q1

Q

How is it that we are 100% responsible for our choices?

A

There is no other power telling us what to do, to choose for us, or to deny our choices. We are responsible for all action, reaction, and interaction in our lives. We are totally in charge of our own life. Nothing, and no one, can influence us unless we choose to allow it; nor can we alter another person’s life unless they choose to allow it. P1/T3/C24/Q3

Unity: How is “Freedom” tied up with “Unity”? Explain.

A

True liberty, true freedom, has something cosmic behind it. All is made of the same stuff. Through physics we know there is no dis-unity in the physical world. In this unity we move, live and have our being. Since our nature is one, since God is One, then the universe cannot be divided against itself. No freedom can exist which denies or destroys the liberty or freedom of any other part of that whole. That would be self-destruction and that which is infinite cannot be destroyed. All freedom, all choice, is tied to the unity of the whole. P1/T3/C24/Q4:

Q

Explain these two statements: All life is the out-picturing of consciousness. All life is relationship. Are they related?

A

Consciousness is cause in everyone’s life. Life can only be the out-picturing of each individual’s inner consciousness. Life on this earth plane is a shared experience, yet all is One; all experiences are the result of the One seeking to know Itself therefore we attract others into our life to experience more of the One. Consciousness is the motivating element; these observations are definitely related. P2/T2/C14/Q3

What does release and forgiveness have to do with happiness or manifesting good in your life?

A
  • If you feel ill toward yourself or someone else you cannot be completely happy. You cannot feel true love if you are withholding it from someone else or yourself. P1/T2/C14/Q5
  • Forgiveness removes blocks to love and our sense of connection to our essence, which then brings us into the harmony from which we make clear choices. P1/T2/C18/Q2
  • In love is found harmony with the essence of God; this opens us up and allows that essence to flow through us and renew us. When we are in this harmony our choices are clear and feed us. It is only when there is a block and the flow of love seems cut off that we muddy our choices.
  • There is no fear that love cannot resolve and there is no negativity that forgiveness cannot transform.
95
Q

Describe what Love is in 50 words or less.

A

Love is energy. . An inner knowing of the heart that can be expressed in the physical world by our actions: kindness, giving, mercy, compassion, peace, joy, acceptance, empowerment, community and intimacy. // “Love is the Self-givingness of the Spirit through the desire of Life to express Itself in terms of creation. . . . Love is a synonym for God. . . . Love is free from condemnation, even as it is free from fear. Love is a cosmic force whose sweep is irresistible” (SOM Glossary). P1/T2/C18/Q3

96
Q

a. Welcome and Invocation: Welcome (what to expect), confidentiality statement, invocation. Rapport begins building.
b. Dialogue:
i. Client expresses reasons for coming, concerns, desired change.
ii. Client and Practitioner dialogue.
iii. Agree upon purpose of treatment.
iv. Practitioner is teaching Spiritual Principles and modeling the revealing of Truth.

How does the work of the psychologist and the metaphysician differ? How does this affect the purpose of asking questions?

  2. Never talk about a patient.
  3. Never take personal responsibility for a patient.
  4. Money is not the objective.

  8. Never try to convert.
  9. Be spontaneous and joyful.
  10. Demonstration is the point. P1/T1/C2/Q5
101
Q

What is the difference between mental affirmation and spiritual realization?

A

Mental affirmation limits one to what can be consciously imagined as possible in form. Spiritual realization is a deep embodiment of the Truth that in God all things are possible—one need not know how and one is not concerned about how it will look. “Mental affirmation readjusts consciousness to a new influx of Life, while spiritual realization opens the flood gates of consciousness and lets through that which knows only the joy of its own self-expression.” (HTU 110.1) P2/T1/C6/Q1

102
Q

What is the basis of mental conflict?

A

Mental conflict arises because of the disparity between the original thought patterns in the Mind of God and the conscious and unconscious thought patterns of the individual. “Even though he [man] is born in a state of spiritual perfection, because he has a creative mind and because he is an individual, he can think independently of the fundamental harmony in the universe.” (HTU 113.1) P2/T1/C6/Q2

104
Q

Explain two ways the Practitioner uses the Law of Cause and Effect in Spiritual Counseling.:

A
  1. When s/he conceives a new idea for a definite and specific purpose.
  2. When s/he recognizes something undesirable not as conditions imposed on his/her client, but as logical sequential unfoldment of that life. P2/T1/C7a/Q3
105
Q

How does the Practitioner assist the client

  • to identify the core belief behind the unwanted condition?
  • in letting go of an old belief that is blocking the manifesting of something desired?
A
  • By listening for emotions being expressed, tracing back to the feeling behind the emotion, and then to the belief that caused *the feeling. ** P2/T1/C7b/Q4
  • By depersonalizing the matter, by pointing out that the repetitious manifesting of old beliefs is the result of a process controlled by Law and not an expression of current consciousness. ** P2/T1/C7b/Q5
106
Q

How do rapport, listening, and asking questions relate to each other? How could a PP’s proficiency in these skills contribute to breaking down race thought and subjective thought patterns in the client?

A

Attentive listening can deepen rapport which in turn permits asking more pointed and specific questions.
This brings that which is hidden in the unconscious of the client to conscious awareness. Race thought and subjective thought patterns are revealed and exposed to the light of Truth. “In the metaphysical field it is not necessary that the practitioner shall know, or that the patient shall consciously know, what first induced these inward conflicts. The metaphysician has learned that by taking certain broad, generalized statements and realizing their meaning, conscious thought, acting as law, can and does remove the obstruction.” (HTU 116.1) ** P2/T1/C6/Q5

107
Q

Explain what a Practitioner/Client session is to one not familiar with our philosophy.

108
Q

What does it mean to be non-resistant to life? What are the benefits?

A

Non-resistance comes out of the awareness of Oneness and Wholeness of all life. It is a state of being that accepts life as it unfolds, in a knowingness that all is good, that all has a reason for being for the highest good for all, that there are no errors, that any discord brought about is an opportunity for learning. The great benefit is that we are open to receive our full measure of Divine Goodness. P2/T2/C21/Q5

109
Q

Why does the Practitioner never speak from personal experience?
[Test question was: Why does the Practitioner give advice from personal experience when doing spiritual counseling?]

A

To speak of personal experience, opinions, etc., holds the discussion at the human level of awareness. The Practitioner always speaks through spiritual truth and principle, keeping the discussion at the spiritual level of awareness. ** P2/T1/C7b/Q3

110

How do emotions affect our growth and evolution?

A

“Positive” emotions motivate us to reach great heights in our spiritual awareness and fulfillment in life. “Negative” emotions direct us to distorted beliefs; when we are willing, they motivate us to change such beliefs to those that are more life enhancing. Suppressed emotions, “positive” or “negative,” can create illness, which is a gift, if we understand the illness as a message that our thinking is out of harmony with God, rather than a thing in and of itself. P2/T2/C19/Q1

123
Q

What is the Creative Process in the individual?

A

It is the Divine Creative Process in microcosm—human feeling and belief develops into thoughts that are always impressing themselves in the Subjective creative medium to form the circumstances of an individual’s life. - Eric
A thought plus a feeling, through the operation of the Law, produces a manifestation.
Love is that creative impulsion which sets the Law in motion; bringing thought into form.
God as Love points the way, and God as Law makes the way possible. I am a place where God expresses through this process.

124
Q

How does Spiritual Mind Treatment work?

A
  • Treatment works through the Creative Process, wherein our feelings, thoughts and beliefs outpicture in the world according to the perfect Law of Cause and Effect: “It is done unto us as we believe.”
  • Treatment is not about controlling other people, nor hypnotism. When treating for others we are actually healing our own consciousness, working with our own thoughts, which inner realization, acting through Divine Mind, outpictures through the subject of the prayer, NOT AS OUR WILL, but God’s will, which is always for the highest and best for all. – Eric
  • SMT brings into alignment with Spiritual Truth the consciousness of the one doing treatment. Because there is One Mind which responds lawfully to thought, action must inevitably follow, in accordance with Law and Divine Will.
125
Q

What are Spiritual Principles?

A

Statements of Absolute, rather than relative, Truth taught by all major religions. Those qualities that are Eternally True of God and the Universe. – Eric

126
Q

What are the teachings of Jesus; What is Christ Consciousness?

A

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
The Father and I are One.
Greater things than these shall ye do.
It is not I but the Father that doeth the work.
Judge not that ye be not judged.
The Kingdom of God is within.
Love God with all heart/soul/mind & your neighbor as yourself.
Ye shall reap what ye sow.
Christ Consciousness is surrendering any limited sense of life to the Divine Realization of wholeness and unification with Good, Spirit, God. It is loving from the knowledge that in God all things are possible.

127
Q

Explain the Law and our use of it

A
  • The Law is an Impersonal, Creative Medium, Unformed Substance, ready to take form according to the direction of Mind or Spirit. The Law is the servant of Spirit, or First Cause. It is set in motion through the Word.
  • It is done unto us as we believe.
  • We are always using the Law, for the process is inevitable; we use it consciously by choosing our beliefs and thoughts and deliberately placing them into the operation of the Law by our word. This sets It in motion to create our circumstances and conditions. When treating, we speak our word into the Law and the Law responds in exact measure.
128
Q

Explain how life gets to be the way it is.

A

By the Creative Process. Absolute Intelligence operates through the Word, which is placed into the operation of the Law, which outpictures in manifestation or Form. Soil/Seed/Plant.
Human life is governed by the Law of Cause and Effect. Thoughts, beliefs, and feelings are causal, and operate through Law to produce conditions, experiences, effects. We tend to reproduce our prior experience by this process, unless and until we consciously or unconsciously alter our thoughts and beliefs.

129
Q

Explain what Spiritual Mind Treatment is to someone unfamiliar with Religious Science (25 words).

A

Affirmative prayer which recognizes God and affirms our Oneness with It, then names the Truth already ours regarding a situation, in gratitude and trusting non-attachment.
A form of prayer that assumes that God wants our good. – Eric

Q

What is the lineage in New Thought?

A

Quimby >
Eddy > Hopkins > Fillmore, Cady, Brooks, Holmes
Julius Dresser > Horatio & David
Warren Felt Evans (also Swedenborg)
Holmes < Emerson
< Troward
< Hopkins

132
Q

Who was Phineas Parkhurst Quimby?

A

Considered the “Founder” of New Thought, Quimby worked on the principle that “mind” had something to do with the healing of the physical body. Over 25 years he treated 12,000 patients and was the teacher of Julius Dresser, Warren Felt Evans, and Mary Baker Eddy.

133
Q

Who was Mary Baker Eddy?

A

A student of Quimby, she established the Christian Science Church when she was 65. Christian Science deals with mental healing, but differs from New Thought in that it denies the existence of disease and looks for healing only, saying everything else is in error.

134
Q

Who were Charles & Myrtle Fillmore?

A

Founders of Unity, the Fillmores were students of Emma Curtis Hopkins. They brought a love and warmth to New Thought teaching. Unity began as a publishing house and that is still a major strength.

135
Q

Who was Emilie Cady?

A

A student of Emma Curtis Hopkins who wrote a core Unity text, “Lessons in Truth.”

136
Q

Who was Nona Brooks?

A

A student of Emma Curtis Hopkins who, with Melinda Cramer, became co-founder of Divine Science.

137
Q

Who was Emma Curtis Hopkins?

A

The “Teacher of Teachers,” she was involved in Christian Science and became the second editor of the Monitor. However, she began to clash with MBE and moved on to her own intuitive teaching and founded an independent seminary. She taught nearly ever leader in the metaphysical movement, and wrote “Studies in Mysticism,” 12 volumes still considered the best on the topic.

138
Q

Who was Thomas Troward?

A

Founder of Religious Science, he studied with ECH. He studied world religions and texts, and was influenced by Emerson and Thomas Troward, and most immediately by his teacher, ECH.

139
Q

Who was Ernest Holmes?

A

A British judge who lived in India and studied religion there, Troward lectured and wrote on mysticism and his writings were a major influence on EH. Lectures published as the Edinburgh & Dore Lectures.

140
Q

Who was Ralph Waldo Emerson?

A

A 19th-century Transcendentalist who left his Unitarian ministry to teach, write, and speak on his philosophy. A major influence on EH.

141
Q

Who were Julius, Horatio, and David Dresser?

A

Healed by Quimby, Julius became active in his work. His sons Horatio and David continued the work of Quimby and Julius Dresser. Horatio brought Emerson’s work to publication, and David became a credentialed psychiatrist. He was among those who maintained that MBE’s work was not original to her but derived from Quimby. David was a friend of EH, and gave William James his first insight into metaphysics.

142
Q

Who was Warren Felt Evans?

A

A Methodist minister until he encountered Swedenborg’s teachings, Evans became a disciple of Swedenborg after his healing by Quimby and established a clinic.

143
Q

Summarize the four introductory chapters to SOM.

A

The Thing Itself: There is only God, One Mind, Original Cause, and we are individuations of it.
The Way It Works: The Thing Itself is the One Cause or Spirit, and we are made of it; hence It can do for us only what it can do through us.
What It Does: It is done unto us as we believe. All is Love and yet all is Law. Love rules through Law. Love points the way and Law make the way possible.
How To Use It: We prove knowledge of the law by using it to demonstrate, specifically through Spiritual Mind Treatment.

144
Q

Explain Core Concept 1

A

Core Concept 1: GOD
UNIVERSAL (The Thing Itself-TTI): There is One Cosmic Reality Principle and Presence in the Universe—God. All creation originates in this One Source. God Is. God is All There Is.
HUMAN (The Way It Works-TWIW): Each human being is a creation of God, made of the God-substances, a unique, individualized incarnation of Spirit. This incarnated Spirit is my Essence and the Essence of every human being.

145
Q

Explain Core Concept 3

A

Core Concept 3: CREATIVE PROCESS
UNIVERSAL (TTI): Spirit is the great Causative Power of the Universe. The word, or thought, of God eternally initiates the Divine Creative Process. In this process, Law is continuously set in motion to create, from the Unformed Substance, innumerable forms which follow the thought-patterns of Spirit.
HUMAN (TWIW): Since the human spirit is One with Universal Spirit, and the human subjective merges with the Universal Subjective, all human thought is creative and re-enacts in microcosm the Divine Creative Process.

146
Q

Explain Core Concept 4

A

Core Concept 4: PROCESS OF FLOW
UNIVERSAL (TTI): In the Infinite Nature of God, all conceivable Good is eternally available, ready to flow into human experience. Through some Cosmic Process, this flow of Good is activated and/or increased by human belief, faith, and acceptance. The expression of this essential belief, faith, and acceptance is prayer.
HUMAN (TWIW): The human re-enactment of the Cosmic Creative Process is naturally happening, with or without our awareness. In this process, prayer, or spiritual mind treatment, is one effective way to increase our belief in and acceptance of the Universal Good, the Cosmic Well-Being inherent within us.

147
Q

Explain Core Concept 5

A

Core Concept 5: WHOLENESS
UNIVERSAL (TTI): This is a Universe of Wholeness, Allness, Oneness. Spirit is a transcendent, perfect Whole that, in Its Infinite Inclusivity, harmoniously embraces all seeming opposites.
HUMAN (TWIW): Each human being is endowed with free will and can thus choose to experience freedom or bondage, abundance or lack, joy or misery, all of which lie within the Infinite Inclusivity of God.

148
Q

Explain Core Concept 6

A

Core Concept 6: ABUNDANCE
UNIVERSAL (TTI): This is a Universe of infinite abundance, spiritual, mental, and physical. This Bounty of Spirit, this Allness of Good, is limitless and can never be exhausted or depleted.
HUMAN (TWIW): The infinite bounty of Spirit is the birthright of every human. I am a child of God, creates as a finite expression of God. Thus, I am heir to all the Good there is simply because of WHO I AM.

149
Q

Explain Core Concept 7

A

Core Concept 7: RECIPROCAL UNIVERSE
UNIVERSAL (TTI): This is a reciprocal Universe. For every visible form, there is an invisible counterpart. Everything in nature tends to equalize itself, to keep its balance true.
HUMAN (TWIW): Human life demonstrates the recriprocal nature of the Universe in the laws of attraction, giving and receiving, mental equivalents, doing and being done by, and other such principles.

150
Q

Explain Core Concept 8

A

Core Concept 8: FORGIVENESS
UNIVERSAL (TTI): The Universe exists in the Eternal Now, each moment complete and perfect within itself. In this Universal Harmony, justice without judgment is always automatic, an infallible Universal Principle. There can be no place for divine anger, unforgiveness, or punishment.
HUMAN (TWIW): Human forgiveness is the process that frees us to live in the Eternal Now. It is essential that we wholly forgive ourselves and all others before real spiritual growth can flourish.

151
Q

Explain Core Concept 9

A

Core Concept 9: IMMORTALITY
UNIVERSAL (TTI): Immortality is a Universal Principle, not a “belief” or a bargain made with the Universe for good behavior. God knows only Life, its eternal continuity, evolution, and expansion.
HUMAN (TWIW): “Death” is a human concept, not a Divine Idea. The Essence of every human is the incarnation of God at the center of his/her being. This Essence is eternal and changeless, the Divine Spark that can no more die than God can die.

152
Q

Explain Core Concept 10

A

Core Concept 10: CHRIST CONSCIOUSNESS
UNIVERSAL (TTI): The mystic concept of the Cosmic Christ is not that of a person, but of a Principle, a Universal Presence . . . the Universal image of God present in all creation . . . the “Pattern that connects.”
HUMAN (TWIW): Each human partakes of the Christ nature to the degree that the Cosmic Christ is recognized and revealed through him or her. To that degree, he or she becomes the Christ.
