PRACTICE TEST A TERMS Flashcards
somatic reflex
a fast, automatic response your body makes to protect itself. (involves skeletal muscles)
myosin
protein found in muscle fibers that helps muscles contract
tropomyosin
protein in muscles that blocks actin from binding with myosin when muscle is at rest (prevents contraction of muscles)
anabolism
building part of metabolism; takes small molecules to build them into bigger, more complex molecules
catabolism
breaking down of metabolism; takes big molecules and breaks them into smaller molecules to release energy
active immunity
body makes its own antibodies to fight off infections (naturally/artificially)
passive immunity
receiving antibodies from another source
(like breast milk)
innate immunity
defense you are born with
adaptive immunity
body remembers past infections and fight them off
coagulation
process of blood clotting to stop bleeding when receiving a cut; platelets form the clot
protein fibers hold it together
gastrulation
when cells organize into 3 layers during embryo development
ectoderm- skin, nervous system
mesoderm - muscles, bones, heart
endoderm- lungs intestines liver
