Practice Questions Flashcards

1
Q

Why should PPE only be considered as a last resort

A
  • Engineering controls should be a priority
  • PPE only protects the sole user
  • PPE has to be used by a competent user
  • PPE is a lot of work. It requires training, correct storage, inspections, and parts

A

General:

  • Ergonomics
  • PPE doesn’t cause harm to the user (Materials, Health…)
  • Comfort and efficiency factor (Fit, Lightness, Strength…)
  • PPE instructions for use

Common Requirements:
- Adjustment, aging, rapid interventions

Requirements Specific to Particular Hazards:
- Slipping, falls from height, heat, cold, radiation…

  • Date of first use
  • Date of manufacturing (and expiration if appropriate)
  • User/ Company
  • Record of previous inspections
  • Product history
  • Serial Number / personal identifying number

Q

What are the two essential tasks when destroying fall protection PPE?

A

Administrative destruction
- File should show that the product has been pulled from service with an accompanying picture of the product.

Physical destruction
- Destruction of the product so that it cannot be mistakenly reused once disposed of. Cutting less than 2m lengths for rope, sawing in half, or using a cutting disk in a grinder to deem unusable.

Q

What markings are required on PPE?

A
  • A CE marking
  • Serial number (traceability)
  • An icon directing the user to read the instructions for use

Markings must be clear and legible.

Q

What are the different categories of PPE?

A

CATEGORY 1:
- Protects against a single hazard.
E.G: Garden gloves, eyeglasses, thimble

CATEGORY 2:
- Protects the user from hazards that can cause more harm.
E.G: Crampons, Sports harnesses

CATEGORY 3:
- Protects the user from immediate hazards that will harm with no notice. Will protect the user without intervention by the user like falling from a height.
E.G: Fully body harnesses, Carabiner

Q

In what ways can a textile product be damaged?

A
  • Chemical corrosion
  • Severe abrasion
  • Sharp edges
  • Shockloading
  • Heat damage
  • UV damage
  • Inappropriate storage (heavy compression)
17
Q

What are two methods of managing PPE?

A
  1. Individual management
This is where an individual product its own associated documentation.

Clearer to understand but, takes a lot of time.

  1. Lot management
This is where a group of the same product is batched with the same identifier.

Higher-level of organisation but, is much quicker.

18
Q

What, at a bare minimum, must be visible on PPE?

A

A CE marking and traceability to the associated safety register.

19
Q

Which other ropes can be inspected by PETZL inspection protocol?

A

Beal and Sterling ropes

20
Q

What is a sign of a shock load on a hand jammer (ascension)?

A

Overload indicator will show signs of damage (on older models). Plastic will deform on newer models.

The frame may be bent.

Excess wiggle/ play on cam in relation to the axel.

21
Q

What is the role of CE auditing companies?

A
  • To ensure the product is marked in the appropriate fashion.
  • To ensure that the markings meet the requirements.
  • To ensure that the instructions for use are appropriate.
  • To ensure that the manufacturer is utilizing a quality control system for the manufacturing of CAT 3 PPE.
  • To verify that PPE passes performance tests.
22
Q

Tips and facts

A
  • Any fall protection must activate/ engage before 6kN of force is applied to the human body.
  • The absorbica activates at a minimum of 4.5kN of force (450KG)
  • When inspecting, perform a function test a minimum of 10 times.
  • PETZL’s safety factor is 10:1
  • Deep scratches and gauges are viewed more critically than general wear. It is a concentration of force in a specific area rather than gradual abrasion.
  • Concrete, pain, and chemicals on a product are a cause to reject a product. We don’t know what the effect of the chemical is on the material and how it affects the integrity of the device.
  • When checking a Y lanyard, compare the lengths between the two legs and see if one is noticeably longer. This shows signs of a fall on the lanyard.
