Practice 1 Errors Flashcards
Nuclear energy relies on the _____ of uranium 235, which is a ______ source of energy
fission, limited
Which country has the largest hydroelectric dam
China
What type of plate boundary is the Mid atlantic range of iceland and what does this mean?
divergent plate, produces geothermal energy1
Which way should solar panels face for the most energy consumption
south
What is the difference between active and passive solar energy?
darker area used to generate heat for immediate area, whereas active solar panels are able to store energy for the darker or winter months as well (solar panels)
What is Bituminous coal primarily used for? Whta are its properties?
generating electricity, not usually heating or cooking. It has low moisture content compared to other types of coal.
What is one disadvantage of a cogeneration system?
It can be expensive and is only suitable when hot water and electricity are used at the same levels
How can terrace farming lead to decreased soil erosion?
It levels off steep slopes, which decreases the amount of runoff. This slows the rate of soil erosion.
How is photochemical smog created?
VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and NOx react with UV rays from the sun.
What are pioneer species after primary succession?
Lichen, fungi and moss are pioneer species, the 1st life forms
What would adding clay do to the permeability of soil?
It woudl make it less permeable and water would lead to oversatuation quickly.
HIPPCO - biodiversity
H- habitat loss I-invasive species P- population P- pollution C- climate change O- Overharvesting
Quagga mussels Invasive species example
In lake Michigan, invasive Quagga (sim zebra) mussels wipe out plankton, cause a cascade of death, and eventually result in algae blooms (toxic).
How does species dying off perpetuate the problem of algal blooms?
fish die - detritus use oxygen to remove remains - oxygen decreases - nitrogen and phosphorus increase - algae increases - less sunlight - plants and animals die off
Asian Carp invasive species example
Asian carp released into missouri river from china. Kill off other fish in river including plankton (cascade). Solution - Fish try to go into electrical field in connecting Lake Michigan canal, but float back down stream one stunned. OR dump cyanide to keep from lake michigan OR close docks to lake michigan (econ impact)
