Determining water of crysallisation in hydrated salts and two assumptions to be made

  • weigh empty crucible
  • add hydrated salt and weigh again
  • use pipe clay triangle to support on tripod and heat gently for 1 minute. Heat strongly for 3 minutes
  • Leave to cool. Weigh crucible and anhydrous salt.

Formula: calculate mol of anhydrous salt. Calculate mol of water formed. Simplest whole number ratio.

Assumptions: all water lost and no further decomposition
