Practicals Flashcards
C5 - Reactivity
- IRON: Measure out 10 - 15cm/\3 of magnesium sulfate, zinc sulfate, and copper(II) sulfate. Place filing of iron in each. Copper sulfate should lose colour slightly.
- ZINC: Repeat first step, replace zinc sulfate with iron(II) sulfate. Place piece of zinc in each. Copper should fate and turn slightly pink, iron should turn from green to colourless)
- MAGNESIUM: Repeat first step, replace magnesium with zinc sulfate. Place magnesium ribbon in each. All should react.
C6 - Rate of Reaction
- 200cm3 of 2.0 mol/dm3 HCl in 250cm3 beaker. 10 strips Mg.
- Measure out 25cm3 of HCl into measuring cylinder, add to 100cm3 beaker.
- Drop MG ribbon in. Time until disappears.
Repeat 2 - 3 w/ diff concs of HCl and deionised water. Rate of reaction is 1/time taken.
C7 - Reactions of Carboxylic Acids
PH OF CARBOXYLIC ACIDS:
- 5cm3 of HCl into test tube
- 5 cm3 of ethanoic acid into other test tube
- 5 drops UI in each
- Compare pH
COMPARING MAGNESIUM WITH BOTH
- Fill basin and test tube with with water. Allow test tube to rest in basin.
- 200cm3 of 0.5 mol/dm3 ethanoic acid into boiling tube. Same with HCl.
- Mg strips into each boiling tube.
- After 10 seconds, place delivery tube onto boiling tube with ethanoic acid. Hold upright. Collect gas until full.
- Put stopper onto boiling tube. Hold lit splint over. Remove stopper. Squeaky pop.
ETHANOIC ACID WITH CALCIUM CARBONATE:
- 15cm3 of 0.5 mol/dm3 ethanoic acid into boiling tube.
- Put in 5 drops of UI.
- 5 cm3 of limewater into seperate test tube/
- Place calcium carbonate powder into ethanoic acid (fizzing, red to orange).
- Collect gas produced through pipette above tube.
- Bubble through limewater.
C8 - Titration
C9 - Reaction of Gases
