Plica Fimbrae
a slight fold of the mucous membrane on the underside of the tongue which runs laterally on either side of the frenulum
Sublingual Caruncle
a small prominence on either side of the frenulum on the under surface of the tongue. They are the site where the submandibular glands empty into the oral cavity via the submandibular duct (of Wharton)
Labial Frenum
attaches the lip to the gingiva. Located between the two Maxillary central incisors
pterygomandibular fold-
posterior to the most distal mandibular tooth and spans from the hamulus to the posterior end of the mylohyoid line
Vermilion Zone-
also called the transition zone, the red margin of the upper and lower lip that commences at the exterior edge of the intraoral labial mucosa (“moistline”) and extends outward
Wet-dry Line-
The junction between the dry, outer red portion (vermilion border) and the inner moist mucosa
Linea Alba-
Horizontal white line extending along the cheek(s) where the upper teeth and lower teeth occlude
Fordyce’s Spots/ granules-
small, yellowish, irregular areas located on the buccal mucosa inside of the cheek posterior to corners of mouth
Posterior and anterior pillars
anterior is also called glossopalatine
posterior is also called pharyngopalatine
Paratid, sublingual, and submandibular gland
interproximal papilla
Identify: Foliate Papillae, Filiform papillae, Fungiform papillae, and Circumvallate papillae
Alveolar Mucosa
Located just apical to mucogingival line. Movable mucosa, usually more red due to increased blood supply. Less attached and more movable than attached gingiva
Attached Gingiva
zone of grey to light coral pink mucosa that is firmly bound to the underlying bone
Tori
These are lingual tori. Bulbous protuberance of bone
