Practical: Oral Glucose Tolerance Test Flashcards
3 metabolic abnormalities that contribute to development of type 2 diabetes
1) Insulin resistance
2) decreased production of insulin
3) Inappropriate glucose production (released when not needed)
Insulin production: type 2 diabetes
Normal or exceeds normal
Insulin production: type 1 diabetes
None or almost none
Treatment and management options: Type 1 diabetes
Insulin injections
Dietry management
Exercise
Treatment and management options: Type 2 diabetes
Dietry control
Weight reduction
Exercise
Hypoglycaemic drugs
Why do you think a low GI diet is particularly important for diabetes?
High GI diet fluctuates a lot over time (spikes in blood blucose) whereas with low GI diet there is less fluctuations over time which helps with blood sugar control.
Consequences of lack of protein in diet
Protein is involved in muscle development
Fatigue (less energy)
Weight loss (muscle weighs more)
Reduced BMR
Why does BMR decrease with age?
Decreased thyroid function and lean mass
