Practical Exam #1 Flashcards
Prep for exam
What three assessments must be performed during the practical exam?
- Resting blood pressure assessment
- One site from the skinfold test
- One test from the FMS
What is the maximum time allowed for the client to rest before the blood pressure assessment?
1 minute.
What is the first step in performing a resting blood pressure assessment?
Have your client sit quietly in a chair.
How many blood pressure readings should be taken?
At least two BP readings that are within 5 mmHg.
What should you inform the client about after taking their blood pressure?
Their BP classification and a short explanation.
What is the purpose of performing radial pulse obliteration?
To determine the appropriate cuff inflation level. This avoids excessive over-inflation of the cuff and discomfort, or under-estimation of systolic blood pressure
What BP classification must be correctly identified for full points?
Normal, elevated, or hypertensive.
What should be included in the explanation of blood pressure classification?
- Risk factors
- How BP could be maintained/improved
What is the first step in the skinfold assessment?
Explain the test and its purpose to the client.
What should be done after marking the skinfold site?
Measure it at least two times with calipers.
Explain the skinfold test
the skinfold test helps us determine body composition. since the amount of
subcutaneous fat is proportional to the total amount of body fat, we can predict your body fat % by the skinfold thickness.
What is required for caliper accuracy in skinfold assessment?
Both pinches must be within 2mm.
What is the purpose of the Functional Movement Screen (FMS)?
To assess functional movement patterns.
How should the FMS test be explained to the client?
The purpose of the FMS is to measure flexibility and ROM of different joints. We can identify potential limitations of individual joints and movement ability.
What should be done before the client performs the FMS test?
Set up the test and ensure the client understands how to execute it.
Fill in the blank: The blood pressure cuff should be inflated to _______ mmHg over RPO.
[30-40]
What is the proper method for caliper removal during skinfold assessment?
Open the jaws first.
How to get RPO
- Palpate the radial pulse and inflate cuff to 70-80
- inflate by 10 every 2-3 sec and read when pulse disappears
- inflate 10 more then slowly deflate at a rate of 2 per sec and note when it reappears.
Explain how a normal BP can be maintained
eat a healthy diet; reduce sodium intake; maintain a healthy weight; aerobic exercise
What does the deep squat measure?
to assess mobility of the hips, knees, and ankles as well as the shoulders and thoracic spine with the overhead position
deep squat procedure
feet shoulder width apart
place dowel on head, arms bent at 90 degrees, then extend arms straight overhead.
squat as deep as you can 3 times, giving me enough time to observe from the front, side, and back.
deep squat scoring
score 3 if:
-upper torso and tibia parallel or torso almost vertical
-thigh below horizontal
-knees aligned over feet
-feet straight, heels down
score 2:
- heels elevated on board
What does the hurdle step measure?
bilateral mobility and stability of the hips, knees, and ankles
Hurdle step procedure
palpate tibial tuberosity and measure height with dowel
put band at that height
put dowel on shoulders
lift one foot up and over the hurdle, tap your heel to the ground, and return without touching the hurdle
repeat with the other foot
hurdle step scoring
3 if:
- hips, knees, and ankles remained aligned
- no movement in lumbar spine
- dowel stays parallel
what does the incline lunge measure?
assesses hip and ankle mobility and knee stability
incline lunge procedure
measure distance from floor to tibial tuberosity= distance they space their feet apart on board
demo both sides and how to hold dowel behind
bend knees and touch your back knee to front heel
3 times total, then switch sides and repeat
incline lunge scoring
front heels stays down
rear knee touches front heel
cannot lean upper body forward, left or right
shoulder mobility test measures…
bilateral shoulder ROM and scapular mobility
shoulder mobility test procedures
measure base of hand to tip of middle finger
make 2 fists with fingers wrapped around your thumbs
extend both arms out to your sides
at the same time, move your right hand overhead and down your back and move your left hand up your back
shoulder mobility scoring
3 if the distance is 1 hand length
active leg raise measures…
active hamstring and calf flexibility
active leg raise procedures
lie flat on your back
arms to your sides, palms up
I will place dowel midway between knee and hip
active leg raise scoring
3 if leg goes past dowel; leg stays straight; other leg stays extended
trunk stability pushup measures
trunk stability
pushup procedures
lie face down on the floor
feet together
hands shoulder width apart in line with the forehead
elbows point out
female regression: move hands down to clavicle
pushup scoring
3 if no sag in the spine
2 if regression is performed with no sag
