Practical Analysis📏 Flashcards
Precision
When repeated measurements of the same quantity give values that are close in agreement
Accuracy
How close the results of an experiment are to the ‘true value’
Repeatability
The closeness of agreement between independent results obtained with the same method on identical test material and same conditions
Reproducibility
closeness of agreement between independent results obtained with the same method on identical test material but under different conditions
Mistakes
Avoidable errors
- misreading numbers on scale
- spillages
Systematic error
Produces a constant bias in measurement that can’t be avoided by repeating the measurement
-faulty equipment
Random error
errors that follow no regular pattern
- difficulty judging meniscus
- uncertainty of last decimal place of measurement
Validity
Refers to whether the evidence supports the argument
Independent variable
Variable manipulated by experimenter to observe its effect on the dependent variable.
Dependent variable
The variable that is measured or observed to determine the effect of the changes in the independent variable
Controlled variable
A variable that must be kept constant during an investigation
