Measurements of speed using light gates
MUST BE CONNECTED TO A TIMER
Timer starts when beam of light is broken
Measuring speed using a ticket timer
Marks dots at regular intervals because it works with and alternating current (usually 50Hz) so the pattern of dots act as a record of the objects movement. If there is even spacing on the tape it is moving at a constant speed, increasing spacing is increasing speed. Measuring every fifth dot from the start of the tape gives you the trolleys distance at intervals of 0.10s.
Measuring speed using a motion sensor
Motion sensor transmits regular pulses of ultrasound at the object, detects the reflected waves and determines the time taken for the trip to the object and back.
